Summer has arrived, and for grillmasters, that means the season of backyard cookouts, flame-seared meats, and veggie skewers is finally here. If your barbecue is already in good shape, now’s the perfect time to refresh the rest of your grilling setup.

Naturally, you want your outdoor cooking station to be just as functional as your kitchen, and that may mean picking up a few new tools and accessories. As a seasoned BBQ enthusiast, there are a handful of essentials I never grill without. Spices, rubs, marinades, and other extras may come and go, but these are the staples I reach for every time I fire up the grill.

A good set of grilling tools

Every grillmaster needs the right tools to perform at their best. Of course, you can buy each grilling utensil individually, but many sets already include everything you need, saving you from a sourcing mission. While options range from basic to highly comprehensive, it’s usually best to land somewhere in the middle. I own this Zwilling set, and it’s durable, functional, and has held up through countless grilling sessions.

The right cookware

If you find yourself cooking delicate cuts of fish and vegetables on the regular, a griddle pan is worth investing in. It keeps smaller items from slipping through grill grates and helps lock in flavour when searing meat or making a stir-fry. Just make sure to choose one that can withstand the heat of your grill and an open flame!

An investment-worthy gadget

For those who don’t want to play guessing games when it comes to cooking meat, a smart thermometer is a worthwhile addition to your grilling kit. These gadgets are designed to read the internal temperature of your meat, so you don’t have to cut into it to know when it’s done. There are both basic models and more advanced versions that connect to companion apps and offer additional smart features.

Skewers galore

I’m a sucker for a good veggie skewer, but I loathe single-use wooden ones. Opt for a stainless steel model you can use over and over again. You’ll get enhanced durability and fewer splinters in your food. A win-win, if you ask me.

Cleaning supplies

A clean grill should always be your priority. Ensure yours is in tip-top condition for every BBQ with the right grill brush. While stainless steel bristle brushes have long been the standard, they can actually be pretty dangerous, as they may leave fragments behind in your food. Instead, opt for a sponge-style design or one that swaps stainless steel bristles for a safer cleaning option.
