Cooking on the BBQ is one of summer’s greatest pleasures. Whether it’s grilled meat, fish, vegetable skewers, or even fruit, everything tastes better off the grill. But while a BBQ is a fantastic appliance, it also requires regular care and maintenance.

Here are four essential maintenance tips to help extend your grill’s lifespan!

1. Use the right tools

To clean your barbecue properly, you need the right tools — otherwise, the task can quickly become a real chore.

A stainless steel grill brush is essential. It’s one of the most effective cleaning tools available. If you use your barbecue frequently, don’t hesitate to replace your brush every season. In fact, cordless rechargeable grill brushes have been making waves on social media lately.

My new favourite cleaning tool

It’s hard not to be impressed by this electric grill brush, which completely transforms BBQ cleaning from a dreaded chore into a quick and almost satisfying task.

Thanks to its powerful rotating action and adjustable speed settings, it effortlessly removes burnt grease and stubborn residue, even in hard-to-reach areas.

Its design is tailored for grilling enthusiasts, allowing you to clean hot grill grates while keeping your hands safely away from the heat. The durable stainless steel brush head inspires confidence from the very first use.

With its long battery life, easy maintenance, and compatibility with all types of BBQs, it’s clearly the practical, modern accessory you’ll want to keep close at hand all summer long — or give as a gift to a true barbecue enthusiast.

Warning: This is not a tool for children. Its powerful motor and stainless steel brush head can cause injury.

If you have sensitive hands or want to avoid injury while scrubbing, grab a pair of gloves before getting started

To clean the various surfaces, you’ll need a liquid cleaner. Warm, soapy water works great, or you can use products specifically designed for barbecues.

2. Pay special attention to the cooking grates

Different grill grate materials require different cleaning methods.

While stainless steel grates can be brushed while hot, cast iron and porcelain-coated steel grates should always be cleaned when cool.

You can also leave the grate outside on your lawn overnight. Thanks to the morning dew, insects, and perhaps even your dog happily licking the surface, you’ll get a 100% natural pre-cleaning treatment. Just remember to wash the grates thoroughly with warm soapy water the next morning.

Another option is to expose the grates to high flames to burn off grease and food residue. Once the debris has turned to ash, scrub the grates with a stainless steel brush. This method is highly effective but may generate strong odours that could bother your neighbours.

Some people soak their BBQ grates in hot water mixed with detergent and a little vinegar. Baking soda solutions are also commonly used. The grates can soak for several hours or even overnight. However, if your grates have damaged enamel or coating, soaking is not recommended because rust may develop quickly.

You can also crumple a sheet of aluminum foil (shiny side facing out) into a ball and use it to scrub the grates. Some people use the same technique with a newspaper.

Aluminum foil can also be used another way: place a sheet directly on the cooking grates and heat the barbecue on high for about one minute. The foil reflects heat back onto the grates, helping to carbonize built-up residue.

Another cleaning method is to place the grates in a self-cleaning oven. Once the cleaning cycle is complete, simply wipe away the remaining ash.

3. Adapt your cleaning method to the type of BBQ you own

There are a few differences between cleaning a gas barbecue and a charcoal barbecue. If you own a gas BBQ, you’ll also need to clean the burners and gas tubes.

After shutting off the gas supply, wash the tubes with warm soapy water. The burners should be cleaned with a damp sponge. You can use a toothpick to clear any clogged burner holes.

Some gas barbecue models also include built-in cleaning systems that help remove ash, charcoal, and food debris trapped inside the unit.

4. Prevent dirt buildup and maintain your BBQ regularly

A variety of simple habits can help keep your barbecue in excellent condition and extend its lifespan:

  • To prevent food from sticking to the grates, lightly coat them with oil before placing food on the grill.
  • Keep a disposable grease collection tray beside your barbecue.
  • Inspect the grill carefully after brushing it. Metal bristles from BBQ brushes can occasionally come loose and remain on the grate. These bristles could stick to food and accidentally be swallowed.
  • If your BBQ remains outdoors or is only partially sheltered under a canopy or awning, use a protective cover.
  • While you should clean your barbecue after every use, it’s also recommended to perform a thorough deep cleaning at least once a year.
  • If you own an electric barbecue, never place any of its components in a pyrolytic self-cleaning oven, as they are not designed to withstand such high temperatures.
  • Always shut off the gas supply completely after each use.
