I Tested The Lomi Kitchen Composter: Green Revolution Or Just Another Gadget?

Published:

(Lomi)

Lomi promises quick, eco-friendly composting on your counter. I tested it—here’s what works and what doesn’t.

Composting is one of the oldest practices for managing organic waste—but also one of the slowest. For centuries, people tossed scraps into a pile at the back of the yard and waited for nature to do its work.

Today, with limited time, space, and municipal composting solutions, that method isn’t accessible to everyone. That’s where Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter comes in—a compact, stylish countertop composter that promises to turn food waste into fertilizer in less than 24 hours.

Unlike other devices that only dehydrate scraps, Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter recreates the actual conditions of natural composting. Curious to see if it could live up to the promise, I tested this Canadian-designed appliance for a few weeks.

Everything you need to know about the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter

The Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter holds up to three litres of food waste. Since I cook a lot, I usually fill it in a day or two. Its design is sleek and modern, with a single control button, clear icons for each mode, and a progress bar showing every stage (drying, mixing, cooling).

The machine also has two charcoal filters (one inside and one at the back) that effectively block odours. It comes with several charcoal refills, which should be replaced monthly.

How does the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter work?

The Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter speeds up food waste decomposition through three key steps: grinding, regulating moisture, and aeration, all of which encourage essential microbial activity.

In short, it combines all stages of decomposition—both physical and chemical—at the same time, drastically reducing the process. That’s what makes it one of the fastest and most effective countertop composters available. You can even toss in certified compostable bags.

Unlike many other devices that simply dry and grind food scraps without much added value, Lomi goes further by recreating true composting conditions: heat, airflow, humidity, and even micro-organisms. The result is a nutrient-rich soil additive, perfect for plants.

What modes does the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter offer?

The Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter offers three useful modes, each with its own purpose:

  • Eco Express Mode: quick and efficientIn just three to five hours, your scraps are reduced to a dry residue—perfect for the compost bin or green bin. It doesn’t produce fertilizer, but it’s a simple and quick way to reduce kitchen waste daily.

  • Grow Mode: nutrient-rich compostOver 16 to 20 hours, this mode creates a compost rich in nutrients and microbes, ideal for plants. With a lower temperature, it preserves beneficial bacteria. Just mix it with soil to feed your garden or houseplants.

  • Lomi Approved Mode: compostable packaging tooIn five to eight hours, this mode breaks down food waste and Lomi-approved compostable packaging. The end product can be tossed into your municipal green bin, if available.

How do you get the best results with the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter?

To get the most out of your Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter, it helps to know a few tricks. The machine uses smart sensors and adaptive cycles to adjust processing time and quality automatically. To boost efficiency even more, keep these tips in mind:

  • Harder, drier scraps take longer to break down. For faster results, stick to softer and smaller pieces.

  • Cutting large scraps into smaller chunks makes the process much easier—for example, watermelon rinds break down faster when chopped.

  • Certain items aren’t suitable, such as avocado pits or chicken bones, since they won’t decompose properly.

Are there drawbacks to using the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter?

For me, the biggest drawback is its size. It takes up a lot of counter space, which isn’t ideal for smaller kitchens. Luckily, I had room in my laundry area right beside the kitchen, which worked perfectly.

The twist-lock lid is also worth mentioning. Even though it has visual indicators to show open or closed, it can be finicky—you need to line it up precisely, which sometimes took me a few tries (my son struggled with it too).

Finally, the price. At $500 CAD, it’s a big investment. You’ll want to be sure you’ll use it regularly to make it worthwhile.

Do I Recommend the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter?

Overall, the Lomi Electric Kitchen Composter does exactly what it promises—and the results are impressive. I really like the three modes, which adapt to different needs depending on the type of waste and the time available.

If you’re committed to zero waste, prefer sustainable products, and care for plants or a garden, the Lomi is worth the investment despite a few drawbacks (mainly size and price).

If you have the counter space and you’re willing to invest not only in the unit but also in refills (pods and filters), you’ll likely be very happy with your purchase.
