Even if you don’t have a green thumb, getting into gardening can be an extremely rewarding hobby. Spending time outdoors and working the land can be meditative and grounding in the most literal sense, giving you a break from screens and schedules. Whether it’s growing herbs on a balcony or cultivating a full backyard garden, watching something like flowers or food flourish under your care can bring a sense of satisfaction that humans have enjoyed since the beginning of time.
There’s nothing wrong with taking a ‘chaos garden’ approach, but prepping your soil (and yourself) can set your plants up for success and make the work more manageable. That means loosening compacted soil so roots can spread and absorb nutrients, feeding your plants with the right formula at the right time, and keeping weeds from muscling in and taking over before your garden has a chance to establish itself. It also means being kind to your body when taking on tasks that involve a lot of bending, kneeling and lifting.
